What's news: Kevin Mayer departs Disney for TikTok (and an inevitable appearance before Congress), Disney taps Rebecca Campbell to lead streaming and Josh D'Amaro to lead parks and experiences, why broadcast TV networks are going window shopping to fill their schedules, Apple finally buys library content, how remote production is changing unscripted TV, WGA and studios start talks. Plus: Why working from home could be a boon for hackers, and big ratings for NASCAR and The Last Dance. --Alex Weprin TikTok Shock ►Kevin Mayer makes the jump. Kevin Mayer is going from the digital media guy at a (very) traditional media company, to the traditional media guy at a (very) digital media company. Mayer, the chairman of Disney's direct-to-consumer and international division, will depart to become CEO of the red hot mobile video firm TikTok. --Mayer’s departure from Disney comes three months after he was passed over as successor to longtime CEO Bob Iger, a role that instead was handed to Bob Chapek, who was chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. Mayer was seen as a likely contender for the role given his long tenure at Disney, where he served as chief strategy officer, architecting such deals as its $71 billion acquisition of the Fox assets. Mayer's contract ran through the end of 2022. It isn't clear whether the company released him early, or whether he had an exit clause after being passed over for the CEO job. --Mayer joins TikTok at a pivotal moment for the app, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate ByteDance. Less than 3 years old, it has been on a quick ascent that has been aided by the coronavirus pandemic. In March, the app surpassed 2 billion worldwide downloads, according to third-party measurement firm Sensor Tower. Mayer also will serve as COO of ByteDance. The story. +Is Mayer ready to be thrown into the political gauntlet? TikTok has been under pressure in Washington D.C. for some time. The company settled with the FTC last year over violating children's privacy rules, and its Chinese ownership and concerns over censorship have made it a target of politicians. "[TikTok] previously told me they couldn’t attend hearings and testify because executives were located in China. But this new executive lives in the USA. I look forward to hearing from him. Under oath," tweeted Senator (and tech critic) Josh Hawley (R-MO). +Analyst takes: "We likely gained some valuable insight about the strategic ambitions of TikTok by way of the company’s new CEO hire," Evercore ISI analyst Kevin Rippey wrote in a Monday evening report. "Ultimately, we think TikTok naming a well-tenured Disney executive as its CEO speaks more to a company looking to join the ranks of the media establishment rather than break them." More. +With Mayer's departure, Disney shuffled its senior leadership. Rebecca Campbell, who most recently served as president of the Disneyland Resort and previously ran the ABC local stations group, will succeed Mayer as chairman of the direct-to-consumer and international group. Josh D'Amaro, who had been president of the Walt Disney World Resort, will become chairman of the Disney parks, experiences and products division, succeeding Chapek. More. --Campbell inherits what may be Disney's most important growth division. With theme parks and movie theaters shuttered, and TV content slowing down, Disney+ and Hulu will be the growth engines for the company in the coming months. While her background, with a heavy emphasis on local TV, may be unusual for a technology role, her move follows Disney's corporate philosophy of giving senior executives a wide range of experiences across the company. +Speaking of Disney World: Its Disney Springs shopping and dining complex will partially reopen tomorrow. During business hours, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies will be assigned to the area for "public safety and law enforcement functions," but not necessarily mask duty, an official with the sheriff's office on Monday told THR. More. Networks Go Window Shopping ►Inside broadcast's buying spree of "gently used" programming. L.A.'s Finest, Tell Me a Story and Swamp Thing are cornerstones of Fox and The CW's fall schedules but all three shows aired on other platforms more than a year ago. --Indie studio Sony TV is shopping second window rights to other shows including Spectrum's Mad About You revival (which every broadcast network passed on before it landed at the cable provider) and, per sources, other "gently used" series like YouTube's Karate Kid sequel, Cobra Kai. Movie rights are also being floated after ABC and CBS both revived themed nights for features to decent ratings returns. The story. +Apple is finally embracing library content. The tech giant has long said it wants its Apple TV+ service to have only original shows, but Bloomberg reports that it is finally following all of its competitors in the streaming space and talking to studios about acquiring library rights to other programming. In fact, Apple has already acquired some older shows and movies. ►How remote production is changing for unscripted TV — and where it's going. From sterile studios to a hermetically-sealed "fortress," unscripted TV pros are working to improve production values amid COVID-19 restrictions, Michael O'Connell reports. Quote: “We were able to get LeBron [James] in a sanitized studio, all by himself, with everyone else behind glass,” says Ian Stewart of Graduate Together producers Done+Dusted. “With the virtual studios that we’re starting to use, it does actually look like you are moving through the space,” adds Done+Dusted’s Katy Mullen, who also produced both iterations of The Disney Family Singalong on ABC. “These things are developing exponentially in a matter of weeks. You’re seeing a peppering of production values.” The story. +IATSE hires epidemiologists to consult on return-to-work procedures. "We want everyone to get back to work as soon as possible, but we need to do it right," says IATSE international president Matthew D. Loeb. "We are working with these epidemiologists and employers to create standards that will apply across the board in the U.S. and Canada, so no production or worker is left behind." More. ►Writers Guild, studios begin talks amid pandemic — without a strike threat. Instead of a possible strike, negotiators are contending with an actual pandemic. Instead of Peak TV and a production bubble, they must now grapple with an industry shutdown and an uncertain production reboot. Rather than bargaining down to the wire, they’re beginning talks six weeks ahead of a June 30 expiration. Instead of length in-person negotiations with upwards of 100 executives and staff crammed in a room, it’s a smaller number crammed in a Zoom. The story. ►How I'm Living How: Josh Gad, actor, writer and producer. With multiple projects in preproduction, recording sessions for Frozen digital shorts and a new series and film about to release, Josh Gad is busier than ever. From his home in Los Angeles, where he's waiting out the pandemic with his wife, two young daughters and their nanny, he opens up about his new normal, which entails bringing together iconic casts for his Reunited Apart series and reading Harry Potter to his daughters. Why high-profile hacks could increase amid pandemic-prompted remote work. Employees in non-office settings create cybersecurity vulnerabilities, experts say, and without intervention more Hollywood companies could fall victim to hacks like the one that hit Grubman Shire, Ashley Cullins reports. Quote: "When hackers see news that one major talent law firm got hacked, you get a lot of copycat hackers waking up and saying, 'Let’s try that.' It proves to the hacking community that there's gold at the end of that attack." The story. +In other legal news: On Monday, Jen Arnold and Bill Klein, married stars of the TLC series The Little Couple, lost a big chunk of their lawsuit over the reality series when a California federal judge rejected their fraud and conversion claims. The two also won't be able to rescind intellectual property rights — undercutting the idea that reality TV stars can regain the ability to control their name and image if not fully paid. More. ►Adam Sandler to star in Netflix film Hustle, LeBron James to produce. We the Animals director Jeremiah Zagar will helm the drama that sees Sandler playing a basketball scout who brings a star player to the U.S. to restore his career. The story. +In Legally Blonde 3 news: Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor have signed on to write the script for MGM's film. The third installment of the comedy franchise will also see Reese Witherspoon reprisal her role as Elle Woods. Witherspoon's banner Hello Sunshine, the company's head of television and film Lauren Neustadter along with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Platt Productions will produce the film. More. David Arquette is returning to the world of Scream. The actor, who played the memorable role of Dewey Riley in the previous four outings of the genre-skewing horror movie series, will reprise the character for the relaunch being made by Spyglass Media Group, the company announced today. More. ►Maybe people do want their sports back? The first live sports events on network TV in more than two months delivered strong ratings Sunday. Fox's telecast of a NASCAR race in Darlington, South Carolina, delivered 6.32 million viewers, a 38 percent jump over the previous race on March 8. Like other major pro sports leagues, NASCAR shut down in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The ratings. +ESPN's The Last Dance scored too. The final two episodes of the docuseries averaged 5.65 million viewers on ESPN and ESPN2 on Sunday, capping a 10-episode run that also averaged 5.65 million same-day viewers. More. +Broadcast ratings: The finale of American Idol drew the show's biggest total audience since late March on Sunday, although it was down a good amount from last season's close. A Taylor Swift concert special following the finale brought in so-so numbers, and CBS' 60 Minutes had the biggest crowd of the night. The numbers. +Snowpiercer opens to strong ratings for TNT. The long-in-the-making drama brought in 3.3 million viewers for its series premiere and two replays (one on TNT and one on TBS). That makes it the top new entertainment program on cable so far in 2020 and the largest premiere on TNT since The Alienist in January 2018. More. ►B.J. Novak multi-camera comedy in the works at HBO Max. The streamer is developing a multi-camera comedy called Young People, written and executive produced by Novak. Daniel Fienberg writes of the thriller: With an episode count trimmed to only seven half-hours, Homecoming returns as a tiny, almost ephemeral, mystery, a set of very simple puzzle pieces that need to be put together with almost no related emotional component."
