Welcome to Now See This, THR chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg’s weekly viewer guide newsletter dedicated to cutting through the daunting clutter of the broadcast, cable and streaming TV landscape! Comments and suggestions welcome at daniel.fienberg@thr.com.
'Down' by Law
Cater-waiter comedy Party Down, which became a cult classic by virtue of basically nobody watching it when it originally aired on Starz, makes a fairly triumphant return to the premium cable channel on Friday, kicking off six new episodes featuring familiar faces, terrific guest stars and a bunch of wacky new parties. It's not too late to catch up and jump in. The other major offerings this weekend are less enticing. Amazon's horror-satire The Consultant has an appropriately dark and quirky performance from Christoph Waltz, but too often it's a vibe in search of a show. Apple TV+'s Liaison has a great cast of European stars led by Vincent Cassel, Eva Green and Irène Jacob, but our Angie Han laments the thriller's "indifferent storytelling" and "bloated run time."
When the Levy Breaks
Have you ever wanted to watch Eugene Levy traveling to exotic locales, staying in wildly overpriced hotels and kvetching? Wait. Really? That's a very specific thing! And it's the premise of The Reluctant Traveler, an unscripted Apple TV+ show in which Levy — hater of heights, flights, water, wildlife and many foods — goes around the world and comes to realize that he's not as much of a curmudgeon as he spent 75 years thinking he was. The eight-episode series becomes formulaic in a hurry, and it doesn't really feel like sending the Schitt's Creek star to Venice or Utah is really stretching his boundaries. But some of the hotels are spectacular — the train-car accommodations in South Africa and a semi-private island in the Maldives are standouts — and some of the photography is beautiful. Plus, every once in a while, Levy hits a sweet spot of wry sincerity that's very likable.
'Outer' Theory
I may have stopped watching Netflix's Outer Banksin its second season, but the teen drama has a burgeoning fanbase, including my TV's Top 5 podcast co-host Lesley Goldberg. Pogues and Kooks can rejoice, because Outer Banks is back for its third season — with a fourth season already ordered — which is sure to get at least a small bump from star Madelyn Cline's appearance in Glass Onion. No review from me, but be sure to check out THR's chat with Cline and co-stars Chase Stokes and Drew Starkey from the season's red carpet premiere.
Bear-ly Breathing
Look, everybody's all Cocaine Bear this and Cocaine Bear that, but what if you want the pleasures of Cocaine Bear without leaving your house? Well, start with Narcos and Narcos: Mexico on Netflix, but sandwich a Netflix viewing of Paddington in between. Tubi has not one, but two movies simply titled Bear , one a British crime drama from 2019 and the other a trashy-looking horror film from 2010 about two couples whose car breaks down "in the territory of a clan of colossal bears." You know which to watch, possibly in tandem with Blow, also on Tubi. There's always The Bear from FX on Hulu and Brother Bear and its sequel that I didn't know existed on Disney+, while Billy Corben's two Cocaine Cowboys documentaries are on Amazon and Hulu. Sounds like a fun weekend!
We Bought a Boo
With Cocaine Bear too clearly a cinematic experience to go straight to streaming, new options across the digital horizon are a bit limited. Amazon has squished a bunch of Quibis together and called it Die Hart: The Movie, but Quibi fans aren't so easily fooled. Maybe there will be more mirth stemming from Netflix's We Have a Ghost, which features David Harbour, Anthony Mackie, Tig Notaro and Jennifer Coolidge. Or head over to Hulu for Onyx Collective and Hulu's Bruiser, a family drama that our Lovia Gyarkye singles out for the potential exhibited by director Miles Warren.
Honoring Richard Belzer
Epically sardonic stand-up veteran Richard Belzer, who played Det. John Munch on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (and on eight other shows in-between), died this week at the age of 78. The absence of Homicide is one of the great failings of the streaming space, but SVU is available on Hulu and Peacock. How to choose the best Belzer episodes? Fortunately, USA has scheduled a Munch-a-Thon on Sunday afternoon and evening, featuring an assortment of Belzer's finest moments.
